Great Towns in the Flathead Valley

Kalispell

The City of Kalispell serves as the retail, government and business hub of the Flathead Valley. Kalispell, the largest city in Northwest Montana, has a population of 14,000 people. The outlying area, known as "Greater Kalispell," boosts the population up to 35,000 people.

Downtown Kalispell consists of many nicely restored buildings along Main Street. In downtown Kalispell, you'll find many quality restaurants, unique stores to shop in as well as two small movie theatres.

Also located in the downtown area is the Flathead Valley's largest mall, Kalispell Center Mall. Located in the mall are several national department stores, including a J.C. Penney's.

Kalispell plays host to many great events during the year. One of the most popular events is the Northwest Montana Fair, which is held at the Flathead County fairgrounds each August. Other events held at the fairgrounds during the summer include rodeos, horse races and monster truck rallies.

Racing fans will also enjoy the many racing events held at Raceway Park, which is located just outside of Kalispell. Raceway Park holds racing events each weekend, including high profile events such as NASCAR races.

Whitefish

Whitefish is located 15 miles away from Kalispell. Whitefish is more of a tourist oriented town than Kalispell is, and has an extensive shopping possibilities among its wide variety of specialty shops.

Whitefish serves as the four season recreational hub of the Flathead Valley. The Big Mountain Resort is located just outside of town and provides wonderful downhill skiing in the winter and numerous other activities during the summer. Whitefish Lake, which equals Lake Tahoe in water quality, provides for wonderful boating and fishing. Several first-class golf courses are also located in Whitefish.

Bigfork

Bigfork lies 20 miles from Kalispell and serves as the focal point for water recreation in the Flathead Valley. Bigfork is located on the eastern edge of Flathead Lake, which is the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Continental Divide. Bigfork provides a playground for boating, fishing and other water activities.

Bigfork is known throughout Montana for its fine art galleries and unique western shops, most of which are located in its scenic downtown area. And, when done wandering around these specialty galleries, a person will have no shortage of dining options at the many fine restaurants that are located in Bigfork.
